Where should a small business start with digital tools?

A simple framework for choosing your first digital tools without adding unnecessary cost or complexity.

Start with a business problem, not a list of apps. If customers struggle to find you, your first step may be a clear online profile. If orders get lost, a shared order record may matter more than a new website. Describe the problem in one sentence before looking at software.

Choose one process to improve. Write down how it works now, where time is lost and who is affected. Then decide what a better outcome would look like: fewer missed orders, quicker responses or more complete sales records. This gives you a way to judge whether a new tool is useful.

Check the practical requirements. Can your team use the tool on the devices and internet connections available to them? Who will update it? What will it cost after the first month? How will you export your information if you need to move later?

Run a small trial with the people who will use the tool every day. Give them a short guide, collect their questions and review the results after a few weeks. Once the process is working reliably, move to the next improvement.
